Nguyen Thai Hoc and Hang Bong are often referred to painting streets in Hanoi. Many types of embroidery, lacquer and rock paintings are sold here. Each item holds its own beauty and content. They are of places such as Turtle Tower, Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi’s Old Quarter, Long Bien Bridge, One Pillar Pagoda or the Temple of Literature.
Ha, the owner of a painting shop on Nguyen Thai Hoc Street said, “I have done very good business during the great celebration. Our major customers come from provinces and foreigners.”
“I was born here in Hanoi and have sold pictures and paintings for many years. Customers often told me that paintings were their favourite among other souvenirs and gifts because they have many options. Especially, on the occasion of Hanoi’s anniversary, they become more meaningful because each of them reflects Hanoi’s image,” added Ha.
Many embroidery paintings sold on these two streets are made by hands. However, many tourists also like products embroidered by machines.
The prices of embroidered pictures are varies because they depend on materials and how these paintings were made.
Small embroidery paintings are sold from VND120,000 ($6.1) to VND170,000 ($8.6) per picture. High quality paintings are sold from VND900,000 ($45.7) to VND1.7 million ($86.3).
Mary, a tourist from England shared, “I am very glad to visit Hanoi during its 1,000th birthday. How wonderful your capital is! When I leave Hanoi, I will buy an embroidered painting featuring the Old Quarter because I like them very much.”
Hoa ,from Dong Nai Province, also chose to buy an embroidered painting of Turtle Tower. She explained, “Each person has a different affection and impression of Hanoi. Some people like The Huc Bridge or Ngoc Son Temple. Some like Long Bien Bridge. However, I like Turtle Tower because for me, it’s a symbol of Hanoi. I may not have a second chance to visit Hanoi.”
On Luong Van Can Street, during the great festival, products such as paper masks, leaf conical hats, lanterns, silk fabrics or traditional ao dai are among the favourites for tourists.
Hoc, owner of an ao dai shop on Luong Van Can Street said, “Foreigners are particularly interested in traditional products. One foreigner came to my shop and tried many ao dai to find the perfect fit. However, none of them could fit her. She felt very disappointed and decided to buy a conical hat instead.”

Young people are interested in T-shirts, caps or lovely small banderols having an image of a heart and read: “I Love Hanoi”.
The prices of these products are very cheap. A banderol costs only VND5,000 ($0.25) and a T-shirt costs about VND50,000-70,000 ($2.5-3.6). Thus, not only young people but also Hanoi’s visitors like them. Many people want to wear banderols. Others want to put stickers with a heart and a five-pointed star on their cheeks or foreheads. Many groups of students are wearing T-shirts with Vietnamese flags or holding flags while they travel around Hanoi.
