Authorities to auction ivory found under sea

Authorities in the central Binh Thuan Province said Monday they will auction elephant tusks seized from a local man who found them in a chest under the sea.
Tran Minh Bay, chief of the provincial Coastguard Command Department, told Thanh Nien newspaper that his men had fished out the chest from under 15 meters of water off Tuy Phong District last Friday and found 17 tusks inside weighing more than 90 kilograms.
They had received a tip from a local that Ho Minh Phong, a 36-year-old Tuy Phong fisherman, had found the chest but left it under the sea.
Some of the ivory has decayed.
Phong admitted that his oyster divers had discovered the chest in mid-October but he had left it there hoping to sell the ivory someday.
Police are investigating.
