Vietnamese face off in French chess quarterfinal

Vietnamese grandmasters Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son will take on each other in the quarterfinals of the Cap d’Agde blitz chess tournament in France Friday.
Liem (Elo rating 2,694) is unbeaten in the eight-player group B after four wins and three draws and is in second place with 5 ½ points.
Son (2,633) has four points from two wins and four draws and in third place in the other group.
In the fifth round Monday, Son defeated chess legend Anatoly Karpov, the world champion from 1975 to 85 and 1993 to 99.
Karpov failed to advance after finishing sixth in his group.
The other six advancing to the last eight, all grandmasters, are Hikaru Nakamura (2,733, the US), Bu Xiangzhi (2,695, China), Judit Polgar (2,682, Hungary), Vassily Ivanchuk (2,754, Ukraine), Yannick Pelletier (2,592, Switzerland), and Jon Ludvig Hammer (2,633, Norway).
The biennial US$66,200 invitational tournament is organized by Europe Echecs magazine and began this year on October 23.
