ASEAN meeting on young people opens in Hanoi

The fifth ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Youth (SOMY) and the fourth SOMY+3 Meeting began in Hanoi Monday.
The events have attracted senior officials from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and three of its partners including China , the Republic of Korea and Japan .
Nguyen Hoang Hiep, the Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee, said the meetings are one aspect of the cooperation on young people issues in the framework of ASEAN and ASEAN+3.
The meeting will review cooperation programmes in the past and map out plans for the future.
At the meeting, the representatives will discuss issues relating to young people, brought up at the ASEAN Summit and at the ASEAN+3. They will appraise the preparations for the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Youth and ASEAN+3 Ministerial Meeting on Youth that will take place in Vietnam in 2011.
During their three-day meeting, they will also hold discussions on how to develop the younger generation as well as training, eliminating hunger, reducing poverty, increasing young peoples awareness of ASEAN and promoting input from young people when building the ASEAN Community.
