Deputies urge National Assembly to learn from Hungary disaster

The National Assembly was warned that Vietnam may face dangers similar to Hungary if the country continues carrying out a bauxite exploitation project in the Central Highlands.

The warning was made by a National Assembly (NA) deputy, Professor Nguyen Lan Dung, at the on-going NA session.

“Despite having 30-years of experience in the bauxite exploitation industry, Hungary still witnessed a disaster from red-mud spill. Therefore, it could be very risky for Vietnam to implement this project,” Dung said.

Several officials from the Ministry of Industry and Trade said that Vietnam was different from Hungary as Vietnam had valleys. However, they didn’t mention that the valleys in the Central Highlands region of Vietnam are full of limestone. When the limestone melts in water, red mud can absorb into the underground water source, affecting life in the southern delta region, Dung added.

He also urged the National Assembly to issue a new regulation about bauxite exploitation and respond to the recent petition by former high-ranking officers and experts who opposed the implementation of the bauxite project.

Sharing the same opinion as Professor Dung, another National Assembly deputy, Pham Thi Loan, said that the bauxite project will require a huge investment, but its economic efficiency is very vague.

She suggested that the government should prioritise capital for major projects when the country is facing a serious fund shortage.

She said she disagreed with the current investment plan of the bauxite project, calling on concerned agencies to provide a more proper plan as well as technical measures of the project.
