Commune leader suspended for flood callousness

The chairman of a commune in Ha Tinh Province has been suspended for 15 days for failing to discharge his duty during the recent floods, provincial authorities said Monday.
Nguyen Van Tuan, chairman of the Duc Lac People’s Committee, allegedly ignored calls for help from victims by turning off his mobile phone when the flooding, which hit the commune from October 16, was at its worst.
He did not even join the rescuers to board a canoe bound for flooded areas, local residents said.

After the floods subsided, leaders of Duc Tho District wanted Tuan to report on the commune’s losses but he ignored the order.

Tuan’s deputy, Le Xuan Hoi, was reprimanded.

Rain-triggered floods in central provinces have claimed 76 lives, including 15 passengers on a bus that was swept away by flood waters in Ha Tinh on Monday last week, and left six still missing.
