Ru Ri is the largest disposal area of Nha Trang and a place many poverty-stricken people are familiar with.
The weather is very hot in the afternoons here and the disposal area is covered by a horrendous stench. Workers can be seen with sweat dripping down their faces as they rummage through trash.
People from other provinces such as Phu Yen, DakLak or Kon Tum come here to collect rubbish.

They make their living off of other peoples trash. Often, entire families work this job, including children and the elderly. For the children, their childhood doesn’t include toys but instead, plastic bags used to collect trash. Despite the hot weather, they have no choice for income but to collect trash.
At 11am, a trash truck arrives at the Ru Ri. Workers begin rushing to collect waste discharged from the truck. They rummage through the piles desperately trying to find something to sell. The atmosphere fills with dust as it’s just another day for these trash collectors.
Ru Ri disposal area is located about 10 kilometres away from Nha Trang City
This disposal area has helped not only locals but also people from other provinces to earn a living
Tran Thi Cuc, 82, said, “I have collected trash for 60 years to earn money. I used to collect trash at Binh Tan, Lo Thieu, Ma Vong and now at Ru Ri.”

“This shirt looks dirty but remains good to use. I can wear it at work,” said a woman who just found the shirt in the waste.
