Hanoi’s Ceramic Road, also known as Ceramic Mosaic Road, officially entered the Guinness World Records as world’s longest pottery mural Tuesday to coincide with celebrations for the capital’s 1,000th birthday.
The collective public work of art, initiated by journalist and painter Nguyen Thu Thuy in 2007, is nearly 4 kilometers long and has a total area of around 7,000 square meters. It was completed this year and includes contributions by several artists from various parts of the world.
Also on Tuesday, Thuy was awarded the title of '2010 Capital City's Outstanding Citizen' by the Hanoi People’s Committee.
A permutation of murals and mosaics, depicting Vietnam’s landscape and organized in 21 sections, runs along the dike wall of the Red River. Through its imagery and patterns of the Ly, Tran, Le, and Nguyen dynasties it is a stunning and visual narration of Vietnam’s history.
The wall also brings to life the quintessence of traditional Vietnamese pottery villages like Bat Trang, Phu Lang Chu Dau, Binh Duong, Vinh Long, and Bau Truc.
The most traditional patterns on brocade and ceramic are by Vietnamese and international children while the contemporary paintings were realized by 35 Vietnamese and foreign artists under the guidance of the country’ scientists, architects, and historians.
Guinness World Record’s representatives also announced that the section from An Duong border gate to Tan Ap border gate with an area of 1,572 square meters broke the previous record set by China’s mural with an area of 1,494.4 square meters.
