ADMM Plus to mark new cooperation



The meeting will mark the start of a new defence and security co-operation mechanism in the emerging regional security architecture, has said Deputy Minister of Defence Nguyen Chi Vinh at a press conference.
Preparation for the first Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Defence Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM Plus), hosted by Vietnam at the National Convention Centre in Ha Noi on Tuesday, has been completed.
Attending the ADMM Plus would be defence ministers, representatives for the defence ministers of 10 ASEAN members, the ASEAN secretariat and eight dialogue partners: Australia, China, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Russia and the United States.
It will start a new defence and security co-operation mechanism in the emerging regional security architecture, said Deputy Minister of Defence Nguyen Chi Vinh
"ADMM Plus: Strategic Co-operation for Peace, Stability and Development in the Region" hopes to confirm the solidarity and determination of ASEAN countries in expanding external defence co-operation for the sake of peace and stability in the region. In addition, the meeting will outline the direction and guidelines for co-operation in the coming years.
Activities will focus on exchanging views on defence and security issues to boost understanding and transparency and promoting mutual confidence and trust as a basis for practical co-operation. Countries will also offer opinions on the possible direction this co-operation initiative should take.
ASEAN countries have prioritised five defence-related issues in particular to be discussed at the ADMM Plus, namely humanitarian assistance and disaster rescue, maritime security, military medicine, counter-terrorism and peacekeeping operations.
A joint declaration of the first ADMM Plus will be adopted by delegations at the end of the meeting. Activities will focus on exchanging views on defence and security issues to boost understanding and transparency and promoting mutual confidence and trust as a basis for practical co-operation. Countries will also offer opinions on the possible direction this co-operation initiative should take.
There will be bilateral meetings between delegations. Delegations of China, Laos and Cambodia are scheduled to meet with the Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh.
Specifically, the Ministry of Defence announced that the defence ministers of China, the US, Japan, India and the Republic of Korea would pay seperate official visits to Vietnam from October 10th to the 13th to have talks with Minister of Defence Phung Quang Thanh and meet with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung
