Mobile phone operators sell out iPhone 4

The popular imported phone sold out in a matter of hours after it was launched on September 30.
Vietnamese mobile phone operators were unable to import a large number of iPhone 4.
Viettel and Vinaphone are the two major Vietnamese iPhone 4 distributors in the country.

A representative from Vinaphone said, hundreds of customers were already lined up in the early morning as the sun was rising. There were crowds eagerly gathered at three of the distribution agents to buy the phone.

Staff at Vinaphone Shop No. 384 on Xa Dan Street in Hanoi received the 81st order at 8:30 a.m., but they had only 70 iPhone 4 units in stock. Just thirty-minutes after opening, all of the phones were sold out. The same situation also took place in the two remaining shops of Vinaphone.

Despite launching the sales at 9:00 am, all distribution outlets of Viettel also sold out 500 iPhone 4 units some hours after the opening. Viettel has provided customers with a MicroSim designed exclusively for iPhone 4 and iPad. The company has also produced an adapter for users to use MicroSims for other kinds of mobile phones.

Viettel and Vinaphone representatives said that this was the first time such a “phone fever” case had ever happened in Vietnam. They also added that despite ordering a relatively large number of iPhone 4’s from Apple, their firms got a very modest supply considering the increasing domestic demand.

Due to the limited quantity many staff of the two companies were unable to get the iPhone, and had to wait for more in the next sales period.

Vinaphone will import the second batch of Iphone 4, comprising 300 units, on October 5.

In addition to the short supply, the attractive prices offered by Viettel and Vinaphone are a major factor to boost the iPhone sales. They sold each iPhone 4 at VND2 and VN3 million lower than the market prices, while giving attractive charger packages and warranty cards to the lucky buyers.

Meanwhile, the official distributors need more iPhone 4. Retailers are seeking to lower phone prices to attract more customers. As a result, in recent days, the product has been sold for different prices in different shops.

A survey by Dantri indicated that, on the morning of September 30, most of shops on Thai Ha, Chua Boc and Pho Hue streets in Hanoi had cut iPhone 4 prices to VND16.9 million (USD845) each for the 16GB phone. However, in the afternoon of the same day the price was set at VND16.5 million (USD825) for the 16GB.
