VietNamNet Bridge – Educators have rung the alarm bell over the decreases in the quality of the teams of excellent students to attend the national and international competitions. The problem is that many students nowadays do not want to attend the competitions for excellent students.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, in 2006, Vietnam obtained 38 first prizes in the national competition of excellent students. Meanwhile, the number of the first prizes increased to 82 in 2010, while the number of second prizes rose from 338 to 442, and the number of third prizes from 749 to 945.
However, educators think that Vietnam should not be happy with the increases. The problem is that though there have been more and more prizes, but Vietnam still lacks high prices.
According to Dr Nguyen Thanh Hung, Deputy Headmaster of the Gifted School under the HCM City National University, the main problem is that students nowadays do not want to attend competitions for excellent students. Therefore, the teams of excellent students to join national competitions do not comprise the best students.
The headache now for schools is that 12th graders would rather spend their time studying for the university entrance exams which take place in summer every year, than wasting time to preparing for the competitions for excellent students. In Vietnam, a seat at top universities is the goal that every student strives to.
Regarding the achievements gained by the selected teams of excellent students who joined international competitions, Professor Nguyen The Khoi from the Hanoi University of Education said five years ago, Vietnam’s achievements were the highest in South East Asia. However, other regional countries such as Indonesia and Singapore have caught up and surpassed Vietnam. As for biology, for example, in the last 15 years, Vietnam only got one gold medal.
According to Professor Ha Huy Khoai from the Mathematics Institute, the highest achievements for Vietnam were gained in 2007, when Vietnam hosted the International Mathematics Olympiad and ranked third. Meanwhile, in other years, since 2005, Vietnam has been ranking on the positions from 11th to 15th. If things cannot be improved, Vietnam’s grade will fall to 16th-20th.
Japan, which once ranked after Vietnam in 2000-2004, has improved its ranking considerably since 2005 and has been staying firmly among leading countries
It’s necessary to reconsider policies for talented students.
Educators all say that Vietnam still does not have adequate policy to encourage talented students.
Dr Pham Van Lap from the University for Natural Sciences under the Hanoi National University, said that previously, the teachers, who gave instructions to the teams of excellent students and prepared them for international competitions, were given the modest gifts of some hundreds ofthousand dong. However, they now receive nothing for their merit. Meanwhile, the athletes and coaches, who win high prizes at international competitions, always receive valuable gifts. Lap said that the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) needs to apply an adequate mechanism to award students and lecturers well.
Dr Nguyen Thanh Hung said that MOET should resume the mechanism allowing the students who win prizes at national competitions to be automatically admitted to universities.
