Primary school offers attractive extracurricular lessons to students

VietNamNet Bridge – Luong Dinh Cua Primary School in HCM City, which is famous for “western teaching methods.” has once again caught special attention from the public by offering many extracurricular lessons.
Thao Cam Vien (the zoological and botanical garden) in HCM City was more crowded on the day when hundreds of fourth graders from Luong Dinh Cua Primary School arrived. Every student held a backpack and a plastic stool in their hands. Most seemed very excited by the extracurricular lesson.

After students gathered on the stage at Thao Cam Vien, every class received a new teacher. They were officers of Thao Cam Vien, assigned to help students learn more about wild animals.

A lot of interesting and unexpected questions were raised. “Why do hippopotamus have to live under water?”, “Why do pangolins have so many scales?”, “Why do chimpanzees have such big hands?” or “Why do many animals at Thao Cam Vien come from Africa?”, and “Why doesn’t Vietnam have such animals?”

Meanwhile, other teams of students were shown the way to grow and take care of green pea plants. Groups put chairs together to turn them into tables, wore gloves and used tools they brought from home, received seeds and planted trees as guided by their new teachers.

With great pleasure, every student took a small tree, put it into a small glass full of soil and then watered the tree.

“The teacher said the tree will blossom and bear fruit in 45 days. I feel very excited. How high my tree will be!” a student from 4/1 class exclaimed.

Vu Thi My Hanh, Headmaster of Luong Dinh Cua Primary School, observed that this was the first lesson the school provided in its plan to teach life skills. She noted that the lesson will help students learn more about the natural environment and show them how to work and appreciate manual labor.

In the upcoming month, on the school’s anniversary (which bears the name of agriculture scientist Luong Dinh Cua), the school will organise an extracurricular lesson where students will learn to grow rice. The school plans to lead student to a rice field, where students will learn that farmers must expend enormous effort and time to obtain rice.

In the 2009-2010 school year, Luong Dinh Cua School stirred up the public with its new teaching methods.

At the State-owned school, all students, including the very youngest, are now learning in groups.

Students in classes sit across from each other making it easier to exchange views. In general, there are 11 or 12 groups in every class and four children in every group.

With each session the groups change. The school’s leaders think the ever-changing small groups contribute towards making the children “more dynamic”. They call it student-centered teaching.

In this school year, every student will act as monitor of the class for one week. This method is believed to help students live better and become more responsible. Besides, the school will provide extracurricular lessons to students, where life skills will be taught (two lessons are scheduled every month). Students will learn the skills to take care of and protect themselves, learn communication skills and join social activities.

Hanh maintained that, in order to provide the lessons, the school and teachers must prepare carefully, which takes a lot of time and effort. However, the school believes that the lessons are very necessary.
