Fruit takes on a new shape for Tet

With creativity and skillfulness, Vietnamese farmers are giving regular fruits a very unique appearance for Tet.

Items such as watermelon and grapefruit are being shaped to look different.

In addition to the traditional items usually bought to put on the altar for Tet, gardeners at Vinh Long, Can Tho offer watermelons shaped like a gold bar or a square this year. Gold bar shaped watermelons are yellow on the outside and red on the inside. Square watermelons have yellow or green outsides and the usual red on the inside.

“We made watermelons in the shape of an old time gold bar. Its size is 14x14 centimetres. It weighs about 2.5 kilograms and can stay fresh for a long time,” said Le Minh Tuan, a seller. It takes much more time and effort to produce gold bar watermelons than square ones.
Perhaps gold bar watermelons will bring good fortune
With the very unique shape, gold bar watermelons sold on the internet at VND 5.5-6 million ($297-324) per pair. Square ones were a little less pricey at VND2.5-3 million ($135-162). The price of the fruit is more than many poorer families can spend on a whole family for Tet.

This year, wine guard grape fruits are sold for the first time at Ho Chi Minh City. Gardeners at Hau Giang shaped grape fruits as wine guards which is believed that they will drive away miasma and improve health.

According to Anh Ngoc Company, there will be 600 pairs of special grapefruits sold in the market for Tet. Grapefruits with the word “Prosperity” on its skin will cost VND 550,000 ($29) per pair, and without the word, will cost VND420,000 ($22.7).
